Think Greek

One of our favorite shows is Greek on ABC Family. It’s about a bunch of people who go to college together. Casey and Cappie are two of the main characters—Casey is a popular member of the ZBZ sorority, and Cappie is her ex-boyfriend (they’re still pretty friendly though). There are a bunch of other characters—Ashleigh, Rusty, Calvin, Dale, Rebecca, Katherine to name a few—and most of them live together in fraternity and sorority houses.

In a recent episode Casey and Cappie had a pregnancy scare; there’s a lot to think about after watching it.

For example, hooking up when you’re drunk—even if it’s with someone you love and trust—isn’t a good idea. It can keep you from considering the consequences, and can lead to unprotected sex. Seeing what Casey and Cappie go through after their night together is a good reminder about how important it is to have a plan to prevent pregnancy before you’re in the heat of the moment.

Or look at Katherine’s story. She and Beaver, excuse me, Walter, are now seeing each other and sleeping together. They’ve been using condoms, but Katherine wants a birth control method that she can control. So she did her research and now she’s asking her friends for their opinions. Friends can be a good resource for information about contraceptive methods, but keep in mind that if you aren’t sure about something, chances are your friends aren’t sure either. That’s why it’s important to check with your doctor, a pharmacist, a trusted adult, or a reputable website, too.

Not everything on TV is completely realistic—for starters, college parties usually don’t have the extensive theme decorations you see on Greek and not every guy is as sweet or sincere as Cappie tends to be—but you can still come away from your favorite shows with important lessons for your own life.

Has something on TV ever helped you think about your own life? Tell us in the comments!

Absolutely! Talking to your parents or another trusted adult is a great way to figure things out and get perspective on the stuff that you're dealing with.

Sounds like something isn’t being said here; hooking up when you’re drunk—even if it’s with someone you love and trust. Even if you do “love” and “trust” without being drunk, can keep you from considering the consequences!
